Family Photo...

Post by jayceofbass »

I've never actually taken a pic of all of my basses (well.. most of my basses...) in the same place. I may have to consider a thinning... maybe...

From left to right...

1 - Custom T-Bird copy. Commissioned by me, made here in Canada about 12 years ago.
2 - Custom "SPJones Mr. Bassman" (Warmoth build) sort of, kind of Dusty Hill tribute. Built in the last couple of years.
3 - Carvin LB75. Bought from a local board member. Can't remember the year. But the one 5'er I have just in case.
4 - 2012 Gibson SG. Refinished in pelham blue to match the T-Bird. Undergoing some work right now.
5 - 1978 Kramer DMZ 4000. Refinished in fiesta red with tortoise p/u surround and EMG PX pickups.
6 - Custom "SPJones Mr. Bassman" (Warmoth build) 8 string.
7 - Late 70's early 80's - I think - Rickenbacker 4003. Literally pulled out of the garbage. Complete rebuild with modern parts.
8 - Custom "SPJones Mr. Bassman" (Warmoth build) PJ bass. Black korina Warmoth body, neck from a '90's hot rod P.
9 - Custom "SPJones Mr. Bassman" (Warmoth build) Jaguar bass. Maple Warmoth body, neck from a '90's MIM Jazz bass.
10 - Late '60's Eko hollow body short scale. Originally a righty, made into a lefty by local luthier.
Sometimes I think, maybe I'm lucky I'm left handed. If I could play any bass I wanted, my collection would REALLY be out of control.

Gorgeous!

Love 'em all, but I especially dig that 8-string.

That's lovely! I really dig that gold PJ, and that maple neck is spectacular! I'm not usually into bound Fender-style bodies because I think the sharp angles often make them look crude and bulky, but I love that one! Great finish, gorgeous neck and even the cream knobs add a lot of class and character 8-)

How do you like the Carvin? I know you've owned at least two LB75's, including that VERY green one that was for sale on here a few years ago. I have a love/hate relationship with mine. I've owned two, still have one (all-black with a J and an MM pickup) and I think it's bland, both tonally and in terms of looks, and the neck moves too much depending on humidity. But I somehow like it a lot, and even bought it back 8-10 years after selling it. It mostly sits unused, but I can't bring myself to sell it again :P

It's pretty great for what I need a 5 string for. Honestly, I only have occasion to play a 5'er a few times a year. It's got Bartonini J pickups that sound great. Every one of my 4 string basses - except for the Eko - has a Hipshot D-Tuner on it. I've gotten pretty proficient at drop d tuning if I need a lower note. The music I play is pretty straight ahead rock and roll. So the B-C# notes never get used anyway. I really only use a 5 string for gigs where I have to read, in order to move my right hand around less. It's for cheating basically... hahah.
