Ampeg PF-50T on Reverb for $625

Post by tim »

Someone needs to buy this before I do. It's a good deal, but I just changed jobs and there's no point in spending that much on a toy I'll barely use this year.

Dammit, another one:

I just ordered a B-stock SCR-DI to scratch the itch. I can't buy both in the same week!

Excuse my ignorance here, but I'd like to know what this bass head best applies to the real world... what type of cabinet works best, what size band/gig/room this would be best for... thx!

Ampeg is marketing it as a studio amp; sort of a lower-cost successor to the classic B15. Folks say it can handle quieter live gigs and venues with FOH support (it has a transformer out to send all that pre and power tuby goodness to the mains). But that's not really the point, and the irregular shape makes it trickier to box and transport.

For me, at least for the time being, it would be a glorified practice amp. Playing alone so much has me yearning for a more "interesting" sound, but without getting all wacky with digital effects.

As for cabinets, I will mostly likely pair it with an Ampeg flip-top cab to make it easier to hide from my kids, who are in their peak destroying-shit phase. But I'm also curious as to how it would pair with a higher-end 2x12 cab.
