Here It Is: Fender Mustang Bass

Post by rdavidson »

One of the holy grails...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-Fender-Mus ... SS:US:1120

In the spirit of disclosure, I am sharing this new post here. :-) As some of you know, I've been wanting one of these for a loooong time... no "Buy it now" option, so we'll have to see how the auction unfolds!

I'm at work and will call when I have time to get more info from the seller...

Why doesn't the headstock say "Mustang"??

Sweet. Although you can see a couple attempts at repositioning a strap button.

Looks like a good deal if it's your holy grail bass. I have no idea how much those things normally fetch, though. It will be interesting to see how the bidding goes, as you mentioned. I put it on my watch list just for kicks (not to steal it from you).

I was reeeeeeeeally hoping somehow, magically, no one else would see this. The starting bid was so low, haha. Happy bidding guys, I'm sure it will end up far out of my price range.

Hi, I'm new here, obviously. I live about ten minutes from this seller's Burnsville location. I check in from time to time always on the hunt for a lefty gem, so wish this had hit the store floor instead of eBay. I contacted them to see if I could come try it out in person (and hopefully sway an in-person purchase), but it's sitting in their warehouse and I was turned away. Guess I'll just have to bid like the rest of the masses.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've called about 600 times and sent them email as well... and I haven't heard a single word back. :(

Myabe they don't care. They'll get a good price for the bass even if they don't provide any more information. If folks go for it, it's taking a chance and if it's unplayable and can't be fixed, you can return it but you're in the hole for shipping both ways. I guess that's the risk of bidding on a rare item.

Did anyone else get info from the seller?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is so special about this bass that it commands so much money? Rarity? Sound?
Thx!

Thanks Matt!

PS: reminds me of a little riddle I learn as a kid:

Rare things are expensive
An inexpensive horse is rare
So an inexpensive horse is expensive

Well, I won the auction. I should be excited but I'm still freaked out by how much I paid. I guess you REALLY have to be comfortable with the maximum bid you enter. :-) (I'm still trying to laugh about it and I love my wife for not killing me right now...)

We know nothing about this bass except for the handful of so-so pictures on the auction site. I never heard back from the seller, via phone or email. It's certainly a risk, and I will examine the bass inside and out when it arrives. I'm also going to take it to my local guitar guy and also to Mike Lull -- Mike's worked on some of my other basses and enjoys seeing the rare lefty Fenders. If anything is questionable, or of course if it's not playable, I will return it and eat the shipping costs. It's so weird to pay that much and never get a more detailed description of the bass.

More to come on this one... I hope I'm more excited in the morning UGH $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Congrats man! I know you've been searching for one of these for a long time and sometimes you just gotta take a leap of faith when that dream bass comes along. My fingers are crossed for you!
Sometimes I think, maybe I'm lucky I'm left handed. If I could play any bass I wanted, my collection would REALLY be out of control.

Congrats. Very curious to hear about this one so keep us posted. Don't sweat the cost either. It's only debt. ;) You're not finding another one any time soon.
