On a whim, I picked up a GSR206L series... and for the very inexpensive price $221 ( it was a B-stock item), I was quite pleased with build quality, pickups and EQ, and set-up right out of the box. For a couple hundred bucks I don't think you can go wrong....

It's a great bass for the $$. Especiallthe 4-knob version with the active bass boost. I dig mine. Well-built, nice neck P/J.

Here's the one I bought, and although it's not P/J like Austin's, it has the same EQ with the bass boost, which works well... I think you should get one! I mean the four string of course....!

Don't think this would be the best choice for the music played by the bands you listed, or others in that category. Not to say it wouldn't work though... it would most likely require a fair amount of EQ-ing between the bass and your amp.... as you can see the 4-string is a P/J setup, and the six is a soapbar style, so difference in tone right there... my six has an edge to it, but a bit of warmth as well...

I usually misunderstand these things, but it seems to me the OP is asking if the 4-string is good for those bands listed, not the 6.
And to that, the answer is yes. There's not much a P/J set-up can't do. IMO.

Austin is like me, I also has a GSR200. For me though, I threw away that crummy phat preamp and put a real on in...much better for my "tone",
As well as tossed out that buzzy-J pickup and flimsy bridge. YES that is a JBE dualrail.

AND Austin also has a BXP in his picture ( just like mine ) - which is a better playing bass IMO for sure.

.

I'd honestly trade anyone BXP to BXP if they had a solid color and not that fake flame

You are correct sir.... the OP should stick with the 4-string, and that is what I was gently steering him back to.... unless you're in a Dream Theater cover band, the 6-string is not the right weapon for his music choices.
