Since retiring from teaching, finally released from a desk, I've been doing house repairs, and I'm starting to learn about guitar repairs and electronics, and very simple luthier work. I'm taking it slowly because I'm not the most ept when it comes to tools and wood work. Eventually, I hope to do my own builds from scratch. I have in mind a shape like a Gibson Ripper or Grabber. For a first build, I'll buy an unfinished neck--maybe one day, I'll make a neck myself. I'm so glad to be able to get help via YouTube vids. I've got to stay away from StewMac for a bit.
Have you guys ever done a build? What did you learn along the way that helped you with your build--in terms of tips, advice?

I don't intend to lure you away from Leftybassist, but I can highly recommend following the "Build diaries" subforum on Basschat.co.uk: https://www.basschat.co.uk/forum/15-build-diaries/
Several experienced British luthiers share some of their builds here, but also inexperienced home hobbyists who ask for advice and the best tools for the job. I've never dared to start a build of my own, but I love to watch projects of others. I always especially enjoy the posts by user Andyjr1515.

I've built a few.
Click here to check them out. For some there are links to the build diaries I've kept on TalkBass and BassChat in the more detailed descriptions.
This is the last one I finished.

Wow! I registered and explored it. Wow wow. Thanks. I'm going to love that site. But my allegiances belong to LeftyBassist.
I wish I'd known you when I went regularly to The Netherlands.. I lived about 5 miles from the border. I played in a band with another lefty. Three great lefties in a band? We'd have conquered the world. ha ha.

Well that one is absolutely stunning. I will certainly check out your others. Thanks for showing me that.
