81 G&L L-1000
Re: 81 G&L L-1000
What is the deal with all these older G&Ls having newer necks? Were the old necks inherently problematic? I know a good many MM Sabre and Stingray necks succumbed to twisting/warping over time.
Re: 81 G&L L-1000
I thought the old bi-cut necks were supposed to be less prone to that.
Re: 81 G&L L-1000
I guess people try to set up the bass without adjusting it properly because it has the neck tilt adjustment screw...
I had 3 G&L basses with that feature and all of them came with that screw sticking out into the body a lot and the truss rod over tighten to compensate, also the saddles set higher than usual.

Re: 81 G&L L-1000
What I have found with the older necks that I have worked on by G&L, is the nut
bottoms out before you reach adjustment. I have seen it on just about all of the
80's G&L bass necks, I've worked on. Because the nut stops turning and the truss rod has not
straightened the neck, people would think that the neck is shot.
The fix is very simple, or at least on the ones I have worked on. I added a couple of
washers under the nut, which allowed for addition turns.
The washers I use are a #10 thin wall washer that fits perfectly in the truss rod
slot in the neck. If anyone finds that they are in need of any, please let me know.
I'll be happy to send you some. Much cheaper than a new neck!
