At first I was like "Click!" But then I was like, what the hell pickup is that? It's gorgeous in every other way, but I don't have time for a restorative project right now.

Too bad. The MusicMan sunburst is really growing on me.

Shame someone would do this, they should have just purchased a Fender Jazz bass at some point.

If you're so inclined then I think the asking price is reasonable :)

A Ray with an identity crisis. It wants to be a J.

I'll bet it gets along well with this one:

On second thought, it’s tragically badass.

Wouldn't a MM pickup and a new pickguard cure that right up? What am I missing here?

Edit: .....Oh i see. The contours. Not that bad. For a good price you get a one of a kind more comfortable bass. Plus its not really noticeable to anyone but whomever is playing it.

I think I'd want to know what's going on under that control plate.

I wouldn't mind the contours, either. They look like they were done with skill and care.

This is not a terribly expensive bass, so modifying it to this degree, to make it more comfortable for playing, is ok.. But! - as a finish carpenter, after sanding out the majority of the "comfort" profiles, I would have continued to sand and contour the area until it had a nice transition into the body... such that, if it was painted, it would look stock... and that means that it not only blends into the middle of the body, but up the horn, and down the body-edge...

With that said, if the the body was done professionally, i.e, sanded properly, and repainted; which I think would be around $300-350, would the seller's asking price, plus shipping, plus sanding/painting - would it be worth the price? And, it's no longer a stock Stingray, so, how does this all effect resale down the road?

A lot of "hmmmmm's" to consider... ?

The part that I keep getting hung up on is the tuning machines.

Why??

I would be totally cool with this if this had been beaten up and worn, but the rest of that finish looks absolutely spotless! What a waste. That said, in this condition, I would love to have it, strip the rest of that sunburst off and finish it with natiral oil or just a transparent lacquer.

I would agree with you except the Stingray isn't available with 2 pickups in lefty. You would need a Bongo for that and they aren't being made any more. And, even the righty Stingrays don't have proper coil-splitting to allow for a jazz bass type configuration. That would take some rewiring.

Of course, you guys probably know all of that already.

I would love to hear what a Stingray would sound wired like that: all of the natural aggressive sound of a Stingray uncaged by using a jazz bass pickup configuration. Maybe someone has done that and made a YouTube video.

It would be cool to get it and just replace the front pickup with a MM humbucker and leave it passive. Why not, it’s already kinda fucked anyway. I’ve never been so simultaneously annoyed and allured by a bass before.

Such a rare bass. What shame. :(

I also would like to see what's going on under the hood. I assume the MM PUP rout is intact, in which case why not get the best of both worlds and install a Proto Guitars Hybrid? one of these? I've got one in one of my basses (they custom make lefties too), and it's great:

As for the neck PUP. I'm guessing the rout accommodates a J PUP only, but since it's been butchered already you might as well widen the rout for a second Proto Guitars Hybrid. That way you'd have a full J bass and 2 PUP Stingray combo.

Dang, that's sad but for the price of what it would cost to put together a Warmoth Jazz you can get a bass with a real mojo

How would that compare totally to splitting the coils of an MM?
