I've seen a ton of 62RI JB's but not P lately.
This one looks really nice! (yeah same old color but nice)

I could be wrong but I believe it's basswood.
They do ship worldwide, that's a good thing!

Great instruments, these MIJs, but why is it they can get the Fender logo and model right on the P bass but the J always shows just the Fender logo alone? (And the Fender logo looks "cartoony" to me). I've also never been a fan of the overly bright red pick guards on these either.

This one doesn't look like basswood. Too much of a grain pattern, although I'm no expert. Looks like alder, and a terribly matched body. A solid color would've worked great for this one. Pretty unsightly :geek:

Looking again, it looks like one piece could be basswood and the rest, something else. The one piece barely has any grain, and the rest of the body has a decent pattern.

That's a HYBRID body to give you both wood tones at once! :P

I agree with all of Matts observations, it would be a hard call. Some basswood can have a decent grain pattern, but not usually as prominent as the one side of this bass. Alder however can also have a lack of grain pattern such as the other half. I've seen more examples of the plain alder than the prominent basswood. Take a look at the grain on the logo P bass at the Top of this page, it has both grain patterns, actually more plain than prominent. If I'm correct in assuming that it is a vintage era Fender it would likely be alder. Weight can be a clue also, basswood tends to be lighter, but my alder body 73 P is much lighter then most of the Basswood Squires I've owned, so that's not conclusive either. All things considered if I had to make a call I think it's a good possibility that it is alder, but it is a hard call none the less.

Exactly... My recently bought '62 re-issue JB has that same overly bright red pickguard, which I'd like to change to a more classic color one day...

According to Google Translate, it's basswood. Or rather, "bass wood"

I thought the wood laws were only for something new, not used.

Nope. It's on EVERYTHING. New, used and even used/vintage stuff being sold privately. If it's crossing a border, it's included in the regulation.
Sometimes I think, maybe I'm lucky I'm left handed. If I could play any bass I wanted, my collection would REALLY be out of control.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, given the new restrictions on rosewood crossing intl borders, I wanted to point out that I got to play the MIJ P for sale at NJ Guitar & Bass Center while I was back east with family in Dec. If I didn't need one, I would have bought it. If you're interested, call for an in-hand description, but I recall no major issues/damage, if any, and it played really nicely, as you'd expect one of these to play. It's a classic sounding P for sure, but note it has the really wide nut width, thin neck profile--is it the C or D??--of the early 60s basses, which can take some getting used to if you're more familiar with the more modern, thinner nut width.

It's the MIJ sunburst P about a dozen or so down this page, http://www.newjerseyguitarandbasscenter ... tBass.html
And it's already in the USA.

(I have no affiliation or anything to gain from the sale... just passing along... been meaning to post about my experience at the store...)

I just added this to the Leftorium thread on CITES restrictions- and it's not very good news.
