From the looks of the frets in one of those pictures, they look brand new.... I never knew the whole top comes off - very cool!

Even though they're very un-me, I'd love to have an old Steinberger bass.

They are very difficult to find replacement parts for now, or I should say difficult to find parts from a legitimate dealer. When MusicYo.com closed shop, Ed Roman bought up all their parts. I stripped the tuning screw on the D string of mine, and now I have to figure out how I can get the part without going through him.

The Spirit series wood ones are still readily available, though I've never played one for comparison.

I would love to have one, but not $2k love. I should have gotten one of those musicyo cheapies.

You would probably be better off finding a tool-and-die guy in your local Craigslist than dealing with Ed.

I have a righty L2, previously owned by the late Dee Murray of the Elton John Band, played on several world tours and heard on the EJ album "Too Low For Zero" and the single "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues".

They were located on Sullivan St in Brooklyn? That's no mans land out in Red Hook. Very interesting.

I used to live in Sunset Park about 6 years ago, which is within walking distance of Red Hook. Fodera's nearby as well. I used to ride my bike through there...in the light of day. Sketchy area, and the piers were full of rats, but ever since the housing boom of a few years back Red Hook has taken off with new restaurants, bars, etc.

I had one a few years ago and they do have a nice even sound across all the fretboard. The only problem I found was the weight and the playing position when sitting or standing (probably like playing an firebird or a Thunderbird) in that I was always a couple of frets if I wasn't looking at the neck. I found that it was great if you used it all the time but no if you were swapping between other basses.
