Ibanez Japan SR series bass with P/J configuration

Post by donahue »

The title says it all. I would like an older Japan made SR series bass in P/J configuration. If anyone has one or can point me in the direction of one I would much appreciate it. Thanks.

I don't know if it's Japanese, but NJ G&B has an Ibanez P/J halfway down the page:

Thank you but I think what I'm after, if I'm not mistaken, is an older SR800

These basses seem rare. I stumbled upon a thread on TB dicussing the SR800 and a guy posted a pic of his. I swear there were almost 10 lefties! So I PM'd to see if he'd sell one and he said he sold them all a while ago to fund a Warmoth Jazz. That must be some Warmoth Jazz!!!

The whole reason I want one is because I want a LIGHTWEIGHT P/J that is quality built and I figured there isn't any lighter than Ibanez. My 10+ pounder Warmoth #1 sounds amazing but is wearing on my back and shoulders. I rehearse and gig regularly.

Maybe check out Fernandes, too. There was a 6-pounder on Reverb a couple months back. Also Japanese.

Good call! Will look into that. There was an older one on ebay recently but I think the listing was cancelled.

I believe there is a gentleman here who goes by "danomite" who has at least a couple older SR800 basses and might have a lead on another one.

Try hitting him up.

Yes! That is the gentleman I talked to on TB. I think he sold them to fund a Warmoth. That's what he told me.

See here towards bottom of list. Was posted dec.2015 so I do not know if it is still available, plus you will have to import from Spain...

I believe it is the SR800E you want...

Was going to translate for you but Tim beat me to it.

He's Danish, I bet my left sock that he can communicate in English.

You should shoot him an email...

I just recently sold a late '80's Ibanez SR800 (Black) to a budding bass player who works at my favorite deli for... $100! It was the bass I traded straight-across for my '74 P-bass way back in '92... At the time, I was happy to trade because the SR800 was light, had a thin neck, active eq, and looked cool! I eventually took out the eq/pickups, and put in passive Aero Instruments pickups. just never played it much after that, so I found an original eq/pickup set on eBay (I had given the originals away....), and replaced the Aero's. Good luck in your search - didn't realize it would be a difficult bass to come by these days!

Well once I received a pic, it was a single bucker Gio model. Far cry from the Sr800. Too good to be true. Time to brush up on my Danish lol.

I talked to Lars with the black SR800 for sale. He speaks english. He said he couldn't find an even somewhat fair shipping quote. I said to let me know what those quotes were. Thats where we're at.

I'm not completely sure that the one I linked at NJ Guitar is correctly labeled. Might be worth a phone call. Jay is a very pleasant guy to deal with.

You should ask him to quote you shipping where he would unscrew the neck. It should then fit in a carton which is something like 24 x 14 x 6 and hence cheaper to ship (it is not only the weight, but the carton size also that influence shipping costs).

Last, avoid UPS and Fedex and ask him to use the post office. Paperwork for export with UPS and FedEx is a nightmare, much easier with the post...

Ballpark: you should be paying some $70 or so to ship from Europe by air...

Tim: I did speak to NJ guitar and bass; the bass pictured is in fact an SR 800 but the bass described is actually what is available. They don't update their photos all of the time. Word of caution.

The bass pictured I was told sold for $600. For an SR800...yikes. I wouldnt pay that.

Yolly: Yes I was quoted 70 euro shipping but the seller insists on shipping in a case which I also purchase for 50 euro. I said I would think about it. I hope that we can meet somewhere in the middle on the shipping.

Oh bummer. That's good to know, though.
