Greg at Rocket put up this thread on TB about a special run of G&L L1000s:

http://www.talkbass.com/threads/g-l-l-1 ... g.1081380/

I asked about a lefty version - should be available almost everything they make is available lefty - thought somebody here might have interest.

IMO it is the best bass G&L ever made.

+1. There's something special about those basses. I never played a lefty, but I used to play in a band with a guy who owned a righty one back in the late 80's, and I have NEVER forgotten the sound he got out of that thing. Ran into him by accident a few years ago when we were on the same bill and I immediately asked him if he still had that bass. Thankfully, he still did, though he was playing a Peavy Cirrus that night.

I'm in. :D

I ordered an original L1000 in 1980 or 81 when they first came out from Sam Ash on 48th ST in NYC. Waited about 6 weeks. When it arrived at the store we opened the case and surprise the neck was fretless! G&L shipped a fretted neck to Sam Ash in about 2 weeks and they installed it at the store. The bass was red sparkle/metallic, had an ebony fingerboard and it sounded awesome. The single humbucker in the traditional mid position was really strong sounding. Wish I still had it. Something like this only lefty of course. http://www.bassplayer.com/article/Retro ... L1000/4967

This is a go! They will do lefties and . . . wait for it . . . 5 strings! Don't think that's ever been done before. The deadline to order is June 23. Contact Greg at Rocket Music if you are in.

Hey digi - what are your specs on this?
I'm thinking 5 string for sure - I don't think they've ever done a 5 string 1K before.
I was thinking clear red on ash, but Greg just posted that they are offering an aged natural finish - might go for that

Btw if anybody wants to check out what it will look like (kinda like the Fender Designs site), you can use this link (no L1000 but can just use L1500):

If I had enough cash for two, I'd get both a 4 and 5 string.
I'm going for the classic 4 string, vintage natural finish, and maple fret board. Really excited for this!

Is the string spacing on the 5 17mm?

It's narrower than 19mm I think it is 16.5 or 17mm.

10 of the L1000/L1005s on order so far, Greg is posting specs on the Rocket Music site. Looks like digi's is on there, and so is mine:

Hey digi, I see you went with light tint satin on the neck - so did I! Same vintage natural body finish too - haha great minds think alike. Only dif is you have the maple board, which should look cool with the tint. Vintage all around - a lot of early 80s 1Ks have the natural ash w maple. Rosewood and ebony boards were done then too.

You have good taste sir! Yeah, I was trying to go for that 80s natural finish L1000 look.
Now the waiting begins...
