NBD! Gibson SG !

I really wanted an EBO or SG bass last year, but my arm hit the controls badly on the right handers that I tried. The Viola bass is ok, but when I saw that Gibson is offering left hand basses, I called Southpaw Guitars. They did a really GREAT setup on mine. Ordered it on a Monday, shipped on Wed., arrived last Monday! I am really pleased with the brown finish.

The difference between the short scale SG and the medium scale Viola is readily apparent here, and the SG is a much better fit for my hand. The SG body is very light, with ferocious neck dive, but I am still liking it!

Beautiful, nice finish, and very organic looking. :) Can't help but think the horns make it look like the Devil's play-tool  ... enjoy!

any clue if swapping out the tuners would make a noticeable difference with the neck dive?

probably not. sg's are notorious for being top heavy. even their standard guitar counterparts
have a serious neck dive. what you could do is move the strap button from the neck- joint to the horn on the neck side
and moving the tail side strap button a little bit further in. this should put more mass on that specific button making the guitar more bottom heavy. not sure how much this'll help though.

I am considering moving the behind-the-neck button to a behind-the-horn position. I think that this alone will reduce the neck dive considerably. If I have time today to spend 3 minutes to drill one hole, I will report back on it.

Beautiful! Glad to help finance it ;)

I have a Rogue violin bass and an SG 6-string- I could take a similar photo.

Big, heavy strap to help tame the neckdive?

I think that using the biggest heaviest cable you can find will help as well.
what make is the s.g?

Strange, mine has zero neck-dive, and I dont even have a leather strap on it. Maybe all the finish shifts the weight balance.

I picked up a faded cherry SG bass from Southpaw at Christmas. Mine has the tiniest amount of neck dive but I'm putting some sweet all chrome Hipshot Ultralights on it that will more than likely solve it completely. (Also installing a Hipshot Supertone 3 point replacment bridge.) It's out being refinished right now. It's being painted Pelham Blue so that it matches my T-Bird and will get a light relic job. I'll report back on the neck dive thing when I get it back in a couple of months.

Beautiful bass! The Hipshot Ultralights can really help. I'll be curious if you go that route and if it helps. I have them on my Carvin and like them a lot.

Both basses are Short Scale.

You are right, I was not correct in that the Viola is short scale also, but it is overall longer, and uses medium scale strings because of the tail piece. Maybe I meant to say I like the SG because of the shorter overall length.
