Just A Thought

If this has been discussed before I apologize but I had a thought: do you guys think that because we are lefty and therefore have less selection to choose from when it comes to basses that we are less critical of instruments then our righty brothers? It seems like every other topic on T.B is bashing on one bass or another while on here most of us can find something nice to say about an instrument 80% percent of the time. I don't know just a random thought.

I have been told that because lefty instruments are “different” they get more attention from builders because their shops are not set up for lefty anything so they have to look at everything a little harder…Don’t know if that’s true but that’s what I have heard.

I also believe us lefty players have had to do more research and looking for what we want. I think in general we know our basses brothers. I see more than anywhere else in a sort of smaller community vast amounts of knowledge of basses beyond Fender and music as well.

I’m on Talkbass more than here simply because there is a lot more going on and it covers more ground. But I see many guys buying crap cheap instruments and complaining they don’t sound or play like a vintage Fender or an MTD. I also might add there are some great helpful guys over there but there are also more jerks in general. Just my 2 cents…

The limitations lead us to value more our instruments. You know that it's always a little harder to sell what does not fit you and to find exactly what you want. Consequently, we have a different outlook on bass ownership.

Leftybassist has made all this a little easier and I am grateful for that.

Having come from a board that was often volatile I think we wanted things here to be more casual, relaxed and friendly. And that certainly reflects the people who got the ball rolling here too. I think we're friendlier here because that's the general tone of this place and we all like getting along more than bickering here generally.

Totally agree, this is the most friendly of places to visit. On the quality of lefty basses there maybe some true in that they maybe better built. I have mim jazz that feels better then some righty jazzes am or mim that I've played.

I would say on average that due to the extensive knowledge we have here residing on this board we are more critical. But more critical in a good way. Like 'more critical' as in discerning. We are very open to sharing our knowledge and experiences with each other.

All of the above. I think that because there is so little offer of lefty basses, we simply don't have much to write about! And if we find a mediocre bass, we probably try to make it work or accept its flaws, because, well, there isn't much to choose from. We are like diabetics that rarely get to eat chocolate, and when we do, we don't care what kind or how good it is, as long as it is chocolate.

And also Talkbass, with all due respect, it's a zoo. Lots of trolls and immature members. It gets exhausting trying to have an intelligent debate over there, mostly because the members are so diverse, specially in age. . .

And of course, there's the fact that there are so few of us here in comparison, so we pretty much know who everybody is and try to not to insult each other, because were are not strangers.

With that said, screw you all, Fender are the best, EB/MM suck, there is no God, the Beatles suck, Victor Wooten is God, playing with a pick is the best, 6-string (or more) basses are for abnormal people, I try to avoid buying Chinese products, Fodera are overpriced, I started playing bass because of Flea, Canada is closer to the US than you think, Rondo Music sucks, smooth jazz is for *ussies, eBay is the best, Sadowsky sound great in the mix (although they are nothing more than part basses), and I still don't know what's the difference between a Jazz and a Precision bass.

Yeah, lefties ARE more: intelligent, handsome, talented, artistic, creative, sensitive, romantic, masculine yet in touch with our feminine side, well endowed & therefore better in the sack, efficient water diviners, better at gator wrassling & all round good guys!! At least, that's what my bass business card says.....
