FYI, Gaskell Guitars does make lefty flying V basses (as well as T-Birds and Explorers) though with the "controversial" headstock:

Although it is currently set up as a lefty... and with the control knobs set so far down on the wing, it would be so easy to play as a lefty.....

Click on the pics of the color choices for the Gaskell basses... the tobacco-burst bass appears as tall as the model, but the other two colors/models are quite sexy! - And look more normal.

Considering that it's not exceptionally rare or vintage I would - in a heartbeat if I hadn't just bought that Ric 4004 Cii - take this to my luthier buddy and have it really left-a-fied. Imagine this thing with a symmetrical pickguard. Would still look hella cool. That way you could rout a southpaw control cavity and fill in the righty one. Easy peasy.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older and I want to relive the days of my youth but I'm rather unfortunately drawn to odd shaped basses these days. I do try to keep it in check though. No-one wants to see an aging rocker with balding, graying hair wank out on and explorer... unless you're Rick Nielson .

Hey man, no offense intended. I'm sure you aren't half as ugly, balding, gray and fat as me.

I mean, check out my chins!! Sadly, my chins would fit in perfectly with a 60's road worn P-Bass strung with flats and exclusive use of an Ampeg flip top. And oh yeah, a stool so my back doesn't get so sore. (I have a real self deprecating streak in case you haven't noticed. Luckily my wife married me before I got ugly )

i like that thunderbird? is it a tokai? what do you think of it? ESp the pick ups? Im waiting to see what gaskell is gna charge for theit BIRD as it says spring of 2012

Hey Wolfkeller. I had it made by a luthier a couple of hours from Toronto. I saw several examples of guitars he made and they were awesome. Unfortunately..... he ain't so competent with the basses. The first version was so bad I had to take it back because it was virtually unplayable. He was super awesome about it and made me and entirely new one. The second one was... okay? I didn't have the heart or the patience to go back and bust his balls a second time so I took it to a master builder/refinisher here in Toronto to have it "rebuilt". That finally did it. Repositioned PU's, reshaped neck and refinished. His work was awesome and it transformed the bass. His nitro paint job and relic'ing are especially on the money. I love this thing.

The pickups are Bartolini T-Bird replacements wired up passive. They're perfect.

I like the look of that Gaskell too. It would be great if they did a pelham blue! I can't wait till someone on here gets one and gives it a little review.
