1983 Steinberger on ebay

Post by markcv »

Seems a bit steep at almost $4000. Opinions?

Anybody know if this is an L2 or an XL2? I thought the L2 had a single pickup only.

As I understand it as an owner of 2 lefty steinys, the XL designation came in from '84 but prior to that, L series were assigned to any of the 'cricket bat', or 'oar' series, regardless of having 1 or 2 pickups. In fact, I believe 1 pup steinys are very rare in comparison & were only produced for a couple of years. I've got a '91 4 string 'Elite' series that was originally a tight 5 string that I converted back to 4 & defretted, & a rare as rocking horse droppings '96 XL2W5L, a 'wide neck' 5, of which there are only 2 lefties in existence. Nonetheless, a lefty steiny of ANY type or era is pretty much a collecter's item. There's 1 on Arni's site for about $1000 less if you're looking at buying. My 2 will NEVER be for sale, so that's 2 less lefties on the market! Good luck.

I like the look of a steinberger.
But I am too young to played one back then, and nowadays the prices are a bit to high.
I am a player and no collector.
For this price you can get a custom-made/hand-made bass....

Here's how I understand it:
L1- 1 low impedance p/u
L2- 2 low impedance p/u
H1- 1 high impedance p/u
H2- 2 high impedance p/u

XL faceplates attach from the rear thus they do not have the screws in each corner of the front like the early versions.
Here's my L2, serial number 295, previously owned by the late, great Dee Murray of the Elton John Band. Used on several 80s EJ albums and tours. Listen to "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" to hear this bass.

I go with Austin on the rear v front screws. BTW, what an amazingly great, melodic & underrated bassist Dee was. Listen to any of Elton John's albums, whether you're a fan or not, & marvel at the lines Dee played! (Sorry for the hijack) ;)
