just FYI : the seller was selling the same bass some time ago, advertising it as a "1982 precision bass".

the bass was unsold so he maybe he guessed he was cooler to sell the bass as a 1978

Was just looking at the two eBay pages, and they are literally identical - pictures, and price. According to this website
http://www.theguitarfiles.com/guitarfile576.html
The serial number denotes a CBS-ea bass, with the "S" signifying 1978. Don't know why he thought it was a 1982 in the first listing....

The S8 and S9 serials were used up until 1982. The exact date of the bass is the most recent date you can find on the bass components (so you have to check pot and pick ups dates to be sure). Maybe the seller found out that the pick up date was 1982. Since selling a 70s bass is cool than selling a 80s bass he changed the production date in the auction.
Last year i had a S8 P Bass from a forum member which turned out to be a 1978/1980 hybrid (77/78 pots date, 1980 pick up date). I can't say if the body was produced in 1980 or in 78.
Anyway AFAIK there is not big difference between a late 70s bass or an early 80s bass.

i asked him why he listed it as a 82 then a 78 this is what he said
"It was our mistake, we have since confirmed, the serial number is a 1978 model which is easily verifiable"

Yes it's easily verifiable if you look only at the serial, but i'd like to see the pick up date.
