Back in my Punk days, late 70s/early 80s I was in a popular Texas Punk band, we were heavily influenced by the Pistols(who wasn't back then?) and had just got my first "real" bass, a '72 Fender Precision in sunburst, it was beautiful, BUT, it wasn't WHITE. I stripped it and redid it in white, kept the original tort guard, looked MUCH better! By the time Punk was dead I'd moved on to The Jam and got myself my first Ric 4003 but kept the P-Bass as a backup.

"The Stiffs", AKA "The Stiffs TX".

There was a punk band from LA called the Stiffs too, right?
Did you get to play with any cool bands from the era?

Yep, hence the added "TX", but we thought that was cool. Played with Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, and The Records to name a few.

I THINK your band was briefly mentioned in "Spray Paint The Walls", a biography of Black Flag. Mentioned as a "not to be confused with..." reference.

Foxton, an early influence on me too, also played in Stiff Little Fingers so that's a double convergence for you

Ha, so true, I never thought of that! LOL
Here's the bass Bruce "inspired" me to buy way back when, an '80 4003. I always figured it had to be a very early lefty 4003 as I believe 1980 was the first year of the 4003. It's been thru the mill but still in great shape, it's the one bass I'd never sell, a whole lotta personal history in it.

It's funny, Bruce is most known as a Rick player because the Jam were really careful to tailor their image (clothes, instruments etc) in videos and TV appearances. But for recording and live, except for very early days, I think he used that black P-bass. He would record a song on P-bass and use a Rick in the video.
