Haha! I've read it elsewhere too and Gilmour has taken credit for it in interviews. I tend to believe it. I know he's played bass on some of their other stuff too

The string length I was referring to was the actual length of the string itself. ( not the scale length of the bass which would remain constant as long as the bridge saddles could be properly adjusted) Many standard string sets would not have an E string long enough to properly wrap enough turns on the long reach to a G peg of a Fender bass. (The original question was about a Fender fretless bass) Improper turns or wrapping of the strings could cause slippage and would adversely effect tuning as well as intonation. And with a fretless bass bad intonation would not be a good thing.

Hey, thanks for explaining! I knew that only the string between the nut and saddle were of influence on sound, but as I can always learn, I started to concern that I aybe did not know enough)

I read your earlier text as though you meant there are some fundamental problems with upside-down necks. But now I know you were talking about user faults that may arise because (the E/A) strings could be too short (because designed/lengthened for normal necks).

The other thing I've noticed when I flipped a righty Fender bass and strung it lefty is the tension of the strings feels just a little different,but maybe that's just me. Not on the Gibson's I've flipped ( a couple EBO'S a '69 EB1 and an RD Artist) due to the 2 + 2 tuner configuration.On the righty Fender's I've played strung lefty I found that using a heavier gauge string set (.110-.050) seemed to work better and using a longer E ( you could buy an E from a 35" scale set) allowed 3 wraps around the peg.

Different string lengths in a set of strings????? I'll be the first to admit that I have never uncoiled
them all on a brand new set to compare, but; really? I've had inline forward & inline reverse
headstocks and have never encountered a problem. Now, I may also be an oddball here in that I
do coil the entire length of the string's end onto the tuners. That's how we did it on string basses
in orchestra. I do not like slippage & with the knot I use at the start combined with those extra
wraps it has never been a problem!

Gonna have to check that string length thing out on my next order! Learn something new every day!
