Very 70s! I'll bet it sounds great, but I bet it also weighs a ton. Either way, much too pricey. If I live to be 100, I will never ever consider 1970s Fenders (or Gibsons either) to be "vintage" in any way, shape or form.

There's a picture posted in the auction of it on a postal scale that reads 8lbs, 13oz.

Not bad at all.

??
Never say never- if you live to be 100, you may want to reserve the right to change opinions on a number of things.
I like my "vintage" 1970's Fenders (and Gibsons) just fine (and 55 years from now when I'm 100 I'll be liking 'em even more)...

Am I the only one who thinks the authenticity of that bass is questionable?

I agree. That finish sucks.

the photographer doesn't know how to adjust the filters on his camera, or the pics were taken under CFC lighting at home, or both. I've seen many a mid 70's finish photographed like that. When u see it in person, the finish looks period correct.
I mean, even the color of the capacitor is all wrong for cryin out loud!

Agreed. This photo of my 1973 is taken in natural sunlight filtering thru cloth blinds, but you can see it has the same finish. I could "re-create" the same photographic effect as the listed bass if I took pics in CFC light or even by cranking the color balance/ saturation and/ or brightness levels on the photo.

Carmine: Is that J pickup on that 73 P bass factory?

I've always wanted a Fender to match the year of my birth and with the maple fingerboard and P/J combo, you've made me a very jealous lefty.

Not factory original, but an old mod done long before I got it and way before Fender introduced the "Hot Rod" P/J configuration in 1999. Notice the The J pickup is positioned closer to the bridge than on a factory hot rod P. Needless to say this produces some interesting tonal variations-I hardy ever use the J pickup alone, but typically I blend in various amounts of the J to color the fundamental P bass tone- it's strung with TI flats and sounds amazing! I'm particularly fond of Fender's maple boarded P bass necks thru 1975. BTW, you can see in the pic it's narrower at the nut than the newer hot rod P.

Agree, not the greatest photos. But one thing is clear: the blend of the sunburst tones seems to have sharper edges, which is typical of many sunburst 70's Fenders I've seen. I posted this before, but observe the sunburst differences between my two '72 Js:

I prefer the smoother look of a well-blended sunburst. And when are we going to see a vintage lefty P bass with a rosewood board posted for sale anytime soon? I'm a little tired of the maple board that seems to be found on about 99% of all the stuff that comes up.

Hey my friend, I might be willing to hook you up with a lovely vintage lefty P bass with a rosewood board, if you're willing to swap me for one of your maple board Jazz basses (I'll even take the less blended one). Surely you must be a little tired of having 2 of them.... ;)
