I have seen lefty headstocks with simply the Fender part of decal but never just the model name. In saying that, this logo is period correct but why it wouldn't have been placed to follow the contour of the heastock is beyond me.

Saw this and I think the explanation about the headstock is complete BS. I have NEVER seen a lefty that didn't have the Fender logo but the model only. In fact, it makes no logical sense from a manufacturer's standpoint. If anyone was seriously interested about pursuing this bass, I would strongly recommend you get pix of the neck heel, pots, body stamp, etc. But I believe this is either a parts bass or, at best, a real Fender neck that the logo has worn off or been removed and the model name re-applied.

Very odd and something I've never seen.
I owned many P basses from 1970 to 1975 and they all had only the Fender logo, no model name.
That was pretty standard on lefty basses for those years.

That said Southside is a legit dealer so might be worth inquiring if you're interested.
Priced a tad high IMO

Agreed. I've purchased instruments from Southside over the years. I'd still get some more pix. For $9000, they should be more than accommodating in that regard.

This is what I find baffling about Fender. This is how they've been doing lefty headstocks since the 80's? It never occurred to them to do lefty headstocks this way until the 80's?

Looks like the head stock has been stripped and refinished at some point. Maybe the whole neck. Need to see the heal.

Never saw a logo like that
Complete fake and bullshit story and overpriced
In that condition with need of repair of a logo I would value it 2500-3000 usd max

I had a chance to play this bass while it was here at Guitar House of Tulsa. It's a decent bass but i didn't trust the weird headstock decals either. Now it's $9,000? :D

My new 1973 P-bass black with a maple neck, had one word on the headstock. FENDER.
I concur with all of you- that, is NOT what Fender was putting on the headstocks of left handed basses in that era. UNLESS there were a few that they did this with..maybe someone out there has one? They've only started putting more detailed decals on the later and reissue/ custom shop basses. But, all the off the rack lefty basses I've seen just had the brand- not the model on the headstock. Looks like someone did that after stripping the finish. The other aspects of the neck look correct. The darker wood locator pin dowel on the back of the headstock, and the tuners are correct, and it seems like the neck could be original to that bass.

Hey Peter,

Just before CBS sold Fender, during the "Dan Smith years," they actually
got the logo right IMO. This is my '83 headstock.

Nice! Yeah, that seems to coincide with my estimate that they started doing "proper" logo placement around that time. I really wish Fender would give us the larger logo model on a Fender bass like they did with the Squier Classic Vibe 70's Jazz bass. This is my all time favorite Fender headstock logo look:
