Sims Jazz Bass With "Super Quad" Pickup

Post by jayceofbass »

Just happened upon this little gem in the UK. I'm not really a jazz bass kinda guy but I've always wanted a bass with this pickup in it. If I weren't in the Covid induced poor house I'd be all over this.

Sometimes I think, maybe I'm lucky I'm left handed. If I could play any bass I wanted, my collection would REALLY be out of control.

Cool! Nice Mark Hoppus vibe.
Interesting pickup indeed, I've always been curious about them. I wonder if they'll let you approach a Wal-like tone.

Cool! I’d always assumed these were active...not all, apparently

has anyone ever played one of these? There's surprisingly little to be said about them online, I'm not clear on the history or reviews. So many cool basses coming out of Europe that I would love to try before making the investment...I guess we lefties especially sometimes have to just bite the bullet!

I played a show in Liverpool a few years ago and the bassist in the support act had a bass with two of these pickups in it. (Works out to 15 P/U combinations with 2 P/U's.) I was very intrigued as it sounded very cool.

I actually reached out to Martin Sims after that to see if the P/U's could be used effectively in a lefty bass. Here's what he wrote back...
Hi Jason
Good to hear from you.
Yes the Sims Super-Quads can be fitted to a lefty bass. The result will be closer to a reverse P when in (red) mode & the single coil (green) mode will be on the front side of the pickup, the humbucker (blue) will stay the same rather way round,

We could get a left-handed tri-logic board made so to have a mirror image of a right handed set up but we would get charged a premium for the boards as they do them in batches of 1000. So if you can get some interest going in the lefty community maybe we can invest in this.

I’ve attached a lefty bass with a single Super-Quad so you can compare that with our right handed set up.

I hope this helps.
Martin.
The pic he attached was actually of this pink JB in this thread. I would also think - if you aren't bothered by the LED being on the opposite side of the P/U - that you could get the JB setting in the same location as on a righty. Just the PB setting would be reversed. I actually like a reverse P set up so that doesn't bother me at all.

I'm really considering this one. Without the VAT - which I wouldn't pay if it ships to Canada - it is only around $1100 CAD. I priced out a two P/U P-Bass version from Sims and it was about £2000 without any fancy options.
Sometimes I think, maybe I'm lucky I'm left handed. If I could play any bass I wanted, my collection would REALLY be out of control.

Since it's no longer listed on the Sims site, I'm wondering if you actually bought it? Keep us posted :)
