Hey Pete, Great Question! I would guess (I am no expert) that the neck may have been made in 51 however put together in 53 or 54. This guy has a great video, see 9:30 where he talks about the changes in 54. This is a very informational brief video.

many many years ago (like in the early 90's I believe) Guitar Player mag had a article on early Fender guitars, and this fellow was featured. For some reason, that picture has burned itself into my brain cells, I can still see it clear as day
. They had a photo of this fellow with several of Leo's early lefty creations. 2 Tele's, 1 Esquire - all butterscotch; 1 B&W Strat and 1 2-tone Strat, both hardtails. The picture was taken in the early seventies if memory serves.
