Oh, now that is cool!

I wonder what it is made of. I heard the construction varied quite a bit back then.

Also, that is a strange location for the jack.

EDIT:
Note from the seller: "In the 80s the XL-2 was made of an epoxy resin blend of fiberglass and graphite."

I need to get back to work and stop entertaining this idea. It doesn't help that the previous owner of my blue Rick made me an offer, which would put plenty of funds in the picture... :?

Okay, that didn't work. I sent an offer.

Everyone needs a humbucker bass, right? That is what I am telling myself, anyway.

Hahaha. If you want to scratch that minimalist itch on the cheap, I'm about to unload my Hohner B2B. It's a P/J, though.

Dude, those are very rare. You may want to reconsider selling it. I didn't even know it was available in lefty until way after I bought my second Hohner.

Hmmmmmm. I didn't pay that much for it, and it had been on sale for a while. Rare, but not super sought after, perhaps?

I love the Hohner basses. I rave about them quite a bit.

Anyway, I bought the Steinberger. 8-)

I offered $1800. I thought he was ignoring the offer as a low-ball, but then countered with $1900 a few hours ago. That was a much better counter than I expected so I jumped on it.

I would love an honest opinion from one of you more knowledgeable guys (muck, you have one, right?). Please feel free to throw in your two cents and don't be afraid to tell me I got suckered, but from what I know, I think $1900 is okay.

Oh, crap. The guy shipped it out already and it is scheduled to arrive Monday. I didn't expect to have it arrive until Friday, at the earliest.

The problem is that I am out of town until Saturday night. My concern is not that someone will take it, it's that I am not crazy about it sitting out in the elements for five days. It's supposed to get as low as 40° some nights.

It's kind of silly of me to worry about that because part of the reason why I shelled out the coin for this is because of the durability of the synthetic materials.

Is there a friendly neighbor who could take it in for you and keep it safe?

I don't know any of my neighbors, haha.

Maybe I could have a co-worker swing by and grab it. I live pretty close to our office.

Yeah, I think that's preferable to leaving it outside your door for five days.... ;)

Okay! Arrangements have been made! I got a buddy of mine to pick it up for me.

Yeah, if it was shipped UPS I would just have it held for pickup. But, it was shipped USPS, and they don't have quite so many conveniences.

Congrats on the purchase. I was seriously considering it as well, but I just can't part with that kind of money right now and I really need to be selling off inventory than adding to it.

Anyway, you paid a very good price. Lefty XL2s are rare as hen's teeth, and a white one? Fuggetaboutit. There might be less than 5 in existence. Yours is likely an early 1990 based on the serial #. They're great unique basses, but they do require a certain adjustment. Their scale is longer, and string spacing is narrower. I personally don't find them the easiest basses to slap on for that reason, but it can be done. Their tone is a modern, somewhat sterile sound, but they cut through the mix nicely. They truly are an engineering marvel though, from the fold out leg rest to the boomerang pivoting strap holder, Steinberger took everything under consideration when he reinvented the bass. Make sure everything checks out okay when it arrives, obviously, particularly frets, electronics, and especially the mini tuners/string clamp holders. They are notorious for cracking and nearly impossible to replace. (Thanks to Bill at Hipshot for making me a set of replacements for mine).

Enjoy! I'm jealous. :)

Awesome! I owned one of these - in white - for about five minutes in about 1990. For me, somewhat like a Ric, they're great to look at... but didn't work for me so much.

Good luck!

Thanks, Pete!

A lot of guys don't like these because of the tight string spacing. The Hohners (which are modeled after the Steinbergers to a high level of detail) are 9mm at the nut and 16mm at the bridge. Personally, I love the tight spacing. It plays so fast and easy for me. But, a lot of guys really don't like it at all, which I can understand.
