G&L SB-2 Opinion?

Post by amos »

I want a tribute but they don't make the tribute SB-2 left-handed. The Tribute L-2000 neck is just to chunky for me. I picked up a righty SB-2 the other day and fell in love with it. What would I be looking to pay for a Fullerton left-handed SB-2 w/ Birdseye maple fingerboard?

I'm not sure what they sell for new but one sweet thing about G+L is they offer a lot of different neck profile options on new orders. You might want to confirm with nut width and neck radius the bass you tried has to get the same profile for the bass you're after.

Talk to Matt at Guitar Man :

He's a good guy to deal with and a jedi when it comes to G+L basses.

Thanks, man. I want to get a neck radius as close as possible to my current bass, a Carvin LB-70. It's a pretty skinny profile but with the various neck options available from G&L, I'm sure I can find one that's very similar. I have SB-2 gas that is just killing me right now being unemployed ATM.

How do I measure the neck radius on my Carvin? Is it just the width at the nut?

No the neck radius refers to the curvature of the fingerboard. How you measure it I'm not certain, you may need a special tool to do it, but if there's a way to do it at home Rod would know. Ask him in the Blueprinting and Bondo section.

I'd shoot an email to Carvin too, it's likely a standard radius they use and they could tell you what it is.

I've had two SB-2s. I think they sound like 1-million bucks, but I didn't like the 12" radius (very personal preference) and the last one I had was very heavy.

But they are built like a tank. I think if you order a new one it will run you about $1100 - $1300.

You could get a Yamaha BB414 in the meantime. Those are also P/Js and sound and play quite good.
