S-101 Metallic Red (Candy Apple red) super cheap

Don't be fooled by the price and the shape of the tuners, folks. I have one of these basses. Definitely worth it. For those of us who lust for lefty Squiers and can't get a P-bass, this baby would make a great modding platform.

About the only really crappy thing about these basses are the volume and tone knobs -- they're cheap, flimsy hollow plastic (which you can easily change out). The pots themselves are fine (wired typically, but the volume is a B500, the tone is a A500, and it works great! I know it should be the other way around, but this way the tapers are smoother), the pickguard is fine (not standard size, BTW) the ceramic pup is fine for the most part, but with Guitarfetish/Warman/Wilkinson/Calig/Tonemonster/etc... out there, it's no big deal upgrading the pup to make it sound deeper and punchier, like a good P should. The rest of the hardware and components are typical of what you'd find on a Squier or SX bass.

The necks on these are fairly big, D-shaped and wide like a typical P-bass. The machine heads are actually Jin-Hos, and they are very good quality Korean stuff, on par with Gotoh (they make the Wilkinson stuff). If you have a set of Gotoh GB-1s lying around and have the tools to make the peg holes larger, you can give it a more vintage look -- BUT -- the stock tuners are perfectly solid. I've got some Webstrings elevator cable flats (50s to 110s) on the bass and it can handle them, no sweat. The body I think is alder. The cavity is not the cleanest, but it hardly matters, really.

Great, cheap beater bass. I bought a jet black version of this thing (which in hindsight, I should've left it be) two years ago and use it regularly. I'd buy another one if I had the coin right now, they're that good. I bought from this vendor, he's a totally stand-up guy, ships fast, packages it well and obviously has pretty good seller ratings.

Definitely worth it, my friends. Buy one, before blablas decides to buy them all for his projects ;-)

Yeah, can't beat this price!
Seems to be well built and it has a a beautiful color.
I would just replace the tuners for a more traditional look and maybe replace the pots.
This is gonna go fast!

When I bought my bass, he had the listing on for a whole 17 months after I bought mine, so chances are his store stocks more than a few of these.

If you do buy one, and want to change the machine heads, hold onto them for projects or sell them off, they really are great tuners. There's a store on Amazon.com that sells GB-1s (you can ask for all lefty tuners) for something like 34.95 USD shipped. http://www.amazon.com/Bass-Machine-Head ... ge_o00_s00

Oh, he has some Black S-101 P-basses too.. guess he got some more...

The black on really is pretty, BTW. Had I not decided to give it a nightmare orange burst, my custom tortie pickguard could have made it look really classy:

Does anyone know if the neck pocket would accept a fender neck and or would this neck fit a fender body?

Well, just spoke to Barry, who runs that store, and he says the CAR P-bass is the last of its kind new. Three of the black ones left. Apparently, they don't make S-101 basses anymore, they're just being sold off.

As we say in french, à qui la chance!
