That's a spectacular deal, especially on the 2x10--that would be a decent used price.

I got the 1x15 Players School combo for $400 in one of these sales back in March. I enjoyed it a great deal for 6 months, but decided to sell it to buy a smaller practice amp. I ended up trading it straight up for a mint Phil Jones Bass Cub, which would have cost a bit more even used.

I checked one out locally a while back. It's perfect for some of the small room "acoustic" gigs I play but they are usually too expensive. This used one was a great deal so I pulled the trigger. Arrived today. Amazing amount of low end for a little 12 pound cube. Of course you can't push it very hard but I won't have to. It will get it's first workout this Sunday.

Out of curiosity, what kind of bass[es] are you playing with it? As I mentioned, I found it a bit bright, and I don't like the sound of the basses I have with their tone turned down.

I play mostly P basses but lately I've been using a lefty Dano short horn.

I go for an old school sound, flats and foam mute. So not much in the way of highs gets to the amp to begin with. I was more concerned with whether it produces any real bottom. I heard a 601 a few years ago and was impressed, except for the price tag. Figured the 801 is bound to be even better and this price was very good. Hard to believe it's an 8" cuz there is real depth and guts comin out of that thing.

I can understand why you found the amp bright. If you allow highs into the tone you have to be real careful, you know an 8" speaker is gonna run with any treble you give it. I would have preferred a simple bass/treble tone control instead of the contour type filter but I can work with it.

Gotchya. FWIW, I have Chromes on both guitars I used with the 801: my L-2000 Tribute and a Squier P/J with EMG-GZRs (I even tried some nylon tapewounds on the Squire). No mute, though. In both cases, if I turned the tone down enough to kill the harshness, the sound was muffled... like it was coming from a mile away in a dream.

Ultimately what I really wanted was the 802, which has the VLE shelf-filter thingy in addition to the contour filter. But I couldn't find the deal I wanted so I took the chance on the 801. If MB had managed to squeeze both proprietary filters into the 801 I think it would have been a winner for me.

But I'm glad it's working for you as it's definitely a super-nice piece of gear. And one big advantage is has over the PJB it's broad projection. While the PJB is loud and deep for its size, its projection is a bit directional. It also sounds different depending on where in a room it is, and where you are in relation to it. Some people swear it's giggable but that seems ambitious to me. The 801 does not have that issue.
