I'm having a problem with one of my basses that has a spoke wheel truss rod at the bottom of the neck. The first couple of threads on the truss rod nut look worn and are not gripping the spoke wheel. The threads on the spoke wheel seem to be fine. I cant adjust the truss rod and its a pity because everything else on the bass is perfect.

Does anybody know of a tool tool i can buy to rethread the truss rod nut?

i know stewmac have this tool but there must be a cheaper way of doing it

http://www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/To ... e_Kit.html

any help/advice would be really appreciated!

This is tough one to fix.
Can't be done with simple home DIY tools.

I had almost the same thing happen to me with my ATK, only I was lucky only the thread from the nut (your first picture) was striped out, in your case it's the rod itself where the thread has been stripped off (mine was only slightly damaged).

I'm afraid that from what I see in your pictures you will probably have to replace the complete truss rod, or at least try to get it out and re-cut the threaded end with a smaller diameter thread.

Here you can see what I did to fix mine.

Do you know the size of your truss rod/threads? Wouldn't it stand to reason you could pick up something like this and then purchase the thread size separately as needed?

http://www.amazon.com/Great-Neck-OEM-25 ... thread+kit

Additional threads in most sizes are about $2.45 each:

These heli-coils are only meant as a fix for a inner thread, not for a outer thread.

many thanks for the help on this guys. Its actually the same ATK bass as you have. I never thought of auto repair kits thats a good place to look. I only wish i could find a thread repair kit for the outer thread. You done really great work repairing your spoke wheel. i know theres hope for mine still as i dont want to replace the truss rod or remove the fingerboard it would cost way more than the bass is worth.
