Knobs - sacrifice metal knobs to save 1/3 pound?

Post by Rodent »

Simple question really ... would you be willing to give up using metal control knobs if it would save you a full 1/3 pound in weight vs. plastic knobs?

I'm considering just this move, but I'm finding it difficult to stomach the thought of using plastic for anything except a pickguard and control cover plate. I'm also looking into considering a lighter metal like aluminum, but I'm not finding a pleasing style that is also available in both black and chrome plating

any one care to share their thoughts?

============================================

here's a few additional weight saving thoughts:

- Hipshot Ultralights vs. Schaller BML's = 1/2 pound savings
- alum Type A bridge vs. brass Typa A bridge = approx 1/4 pound

total weight savings by incorporating Ultralights, alum bridge, and plastic knobs is over a full pound! :o using graphite stiffening bars in the neck instead of steel reduces weight by another 3/4 pound. using an ultralight body core will reduce weight by at least another half pound, if not more

all the best,

Metal.

Of course wood would be lighter and pretty snazzy too!

I prefer wood better than plastic,,but aluminum could match very well with some woods especially in satin finish ,like there : http://www.ets-hardware.com/
some of their Bridges are less" angular" than Hipshot ,and could suit very well with the general line of the body
But it is only my taste ;)
