1965 Fender jazz bass

Very tempting, convincing, and first owner Zane being a nice person to communicate with, but after having received more pics, there's too much unfortunate variables on this highly modified left-handed pre-CBS 1965 Fender jazz bass. Neck date stamp, cloth wire, bridge, tuners, pick-ups and L-Series neck plate all appear to be legit, surely, but... non-original new SB finish, non-original pick guard, non-original faulty placed decalls, non-original frets. Not sure about the fretboard + fret markers: it appears to be padouk (a rare original feat, according to Zane) but I'd say all necks back then would have been Brazilian rosewood (?).

Well I'm a bit dubious. I suspect it's a parts bass. I'd need to see a LOT more photos before being convinced it's original. Padauk fingerboard? I've never heard of Fender using padauk on necks in the 60's.

I love when I see this...

"This bass is all original with the exception of the pick guard which was replaced."

"Oh and it was refinished..."

"Oh, yeah... it was also refretted."

I'm going to come out and say that nothing about that bass looks right... the refin on it is horrible as well, IMO. That sunburst looks like something that you'd find on a 70's Fender knockoff. And did they get it refin'd in poly?

I wouldn't touch that bass without some kind of signed COA from a notable guitar historian... it all just looks way too sketchy to me.

The body also looks like ash which I don't think was used until the 70s.

Terrible. That's a $2000 bass at best. It probably plays and sounds nice, but so incorrect.

Also.... as a marketing guy in the Tech world it kills me when I see this: : "This guitar also has a rare Paudouk Fingerboard which adds to the vintage vale of this bass".... vale?? Really?? The sellers are trying to get people to part with a vast wad of cash for a bass, and can't be bothered to proof-read a few paragraphs..
In the topsy-turvy world of heavy rock, having a good solid piece of wood in your hand is often useful...

I was a little sketchy on the body wood as well, but I have seen cuts of alder that look very close to ash so I didn't want to say anything.

These are both pictures of alder bodies...

Fender did Padouk fretboard in 1965 and 1966
But it was too expensive and they came back to rosewood fretboard
A very few left handed basses have Padouk fretboard.
