New Bass Day! SR5 Goodness!

Post by crabby »

Well here she is, my brand new Transparent Gold Stingray 5. I used to shy away from Ernie Ball's unfinished maple boards as they can get dirty and are hard to clean but there is no denying how good this bass feels and sounds.

The back story is that I had ordered a Gibson Midtown bass in sunburst back in December from the the big Canadian retail music store chain and six months later there was no sign of the bass and no ETA was available from Gibson. The guys at the shop managed to locate a single lefty in the cherry color and since there was no sign of the other one ever appearing, I asked them to bring it in. It arrived a week ago and was a huge disappointment. So many little things were messed up that I was forced to return it and pretty much give up on the Midtown as there were no other lefty's in the country to replace this disaster of a bass. Things like bare spots in the finish, bad grounding, right handed pots and believe it or not, a hole on the bottom horn where a strap pin had been installed, filled in and sprayed over. It was really a bad example of an American built instrument.

Upon returning the bass, I asked the salesman to search their chain wide inventory for other lefty basses and this SR5 was sitting in the warehouse. It had been ordered for store stock and was not on hold for anyone, so I decided to go for it sight unseen. Could not be happier. The Alnico pickup sounds fantastic and is a nice change from my other SR5 that's equipped with a ceramic pup. She cost a bit more then the Midtown and is a totally different type of bass, but I am smitten!

Congrats. You made a good move in my opinion. I love my SR5 too and I'm not a fan of fivers typically. Great bass.

Great looking bass - and it's not sunburst! I'm a big fan of amber...

Beautiful bass Crabby. Sorry the Midtown didn't work out...I know you've been looking forward to that.

I wish I could have kept that red SR5 I had.

On a brighter note, I do have that silver Bongo 5 that I've had on layaway for a while that will be paid off in the next month or two, so I'm looking forward to trying 5 strings again.

congrats! I have the same color - boy it looks sexy with the tort.

Yeah, the maple definitely gets dirty of time. I like to think of it as 'well seasoned'..

Well I made the pick guard change today, couldn't resist! I went from this:

To this:

I like them both but give the edge to the cream pearl.

Thanks, I think I will hold onto the Torte for now. Might be cool to switch her up once in awhile.

I have to say I like the tort better, because the pickup and knobs are black, but it still looks great with the pearloid. I'm really fond of SR5s in any color combination.

I like the Torte a lot too and may go back. Only thing is the torte is very dark and pretty much looks black in most lighting other then direct sunlight. I like the contrast of the cream.

Lovely finish, beautiful Ray!
I like the look better with the tort guard too, I never liked white pearloid on any bass.

I'm surprised some of you really don't like the pearl at all. I love the torte too but have a soft spot for the pearl guards. I have actually replaced the plain black guards on most of my MM basses. All but my Bongo....which is still Torte! :)

I like the pearloid myself. I'm getting tired of tort pickguards, including the one on my pbass :-)
