73 P on Craigs in SF
Re: 73 P on Craigs in SF
Don't know how much he's expecting to get for it, but man, I'm starting to get a lil' gun shy about 70's Fenders.
I know the prices have been out of whack for a while, but I'm really starting to think there's a bubble. However, it could last quite a while.
He mentions "the glory days of rock." 1973? I suppose. I do love older basses because I love that older "sound." As do so many others. But that love won't last forever. It'll die when we do, I guess.
When baby boomers run out of disposable income, or when/if rock and roll dies (hey, something new is going to come around in our lifetimes), I think the bubble will burst.
Of course, he's open for offers. Maybe he'll take $1200 for it.

Nice bass. Something about a natural finish over ash makes me think it weighs about 11lbs. though.

Re: 73 P on Craigs in SF
What's the chance of seeing (2) 1973 Fender basses up on Craigslist SF in 3 weeks. I live here and got GAS but for some reason I bought a new MIA 08 Jazz Bass. Maybe because they are.. ummmm, better made and sounding with more modern pups ?? I guess I am bias toward the "collector" basses unless they are 100% original and great condition and if I am gonna play it, why not go for a better tone. The old basses are very nice tho but 10-12LBs is heavy on the back for 2 hour+ sets.
Re: 73 P on Craigs in SF
True that on the back thing BUT....I just snagged a 78 P (for $1200) a few months back -i have NEVER been a P guy but man, this thing sits so nice in the band mix....I hate it soloed, but every guy in the band has said "yeah" on the last few hits....and I got guys i this band that have played with Weather Report/Grover W./Pointers et al....so something must be cool with this older P sound -maybe its just nostalgia....anyway -good luck out there on the never ending quest.

Seller says it's no longer for sale... He decided to keep it... It is still up tho. I suspect maybe a fake ad and no intention for a sale just to see what kind of offers he can get?

P basses have that distinctive tone that sits in the mix great dependent on what type of music your playing. Shoot, the old punk bands were even using P basses in the 70's.... $1200 for a '78.... Nice Catch Bassaria!!Bassaria wrote:True that on the back thing BUT....I just snagged a 78 P (for $1200) a few months back -i have NEVER been a P guy but man, this thing sits so nice in the band mix....I hate it soloed, but every guy in the band has said "yeah" on the last few hits....and I got guys i this band that have played with Weather Report/Grover W./Pointers et al....so something must be cool with this older P sound -maybe its just nostalgia....anyway -good luck out there on the never ending quest.

Re: 73 P on Craigs in SF
I've got a '78 P, B neck, maple board & it sits fat in the mix like no other bass I own. One of these days I'll post pics of my lefties.
