4 string Stingray like

Post by iozz »

I'm looking for a nice 4 string Stingray like, like a real Stingray, or a G&L L1500...
I've tried several basses during the past months (Sterling, Stingray fretless, Stingray5...) and the 4 string Stingray is what I think is best for me, both in sound, confort and playability.

If someone has one for sale, please let me know :)

Didn't you buy a Sterling from someone on the board recently?

From my own experience, try to find an Ibanez ATK300. killer sound-a-like bass at a very good price.

During this year I've bought a Sterling, a fretless Stingray4 and a Stingray5. I've come to the conclusion that a fretted Stingray4 would be perfect. AFAIC the Sterling is too thin and I'm less fan of the sound, the Stingray5 weights too much, and the Stingray4 is the perfect compromise.

I know someone who owns a Ibanez ATK300, I'll try to go and try it. But he won't sell it to me :)

I did sold mine unfortunately a few years ago but they pop out on ebay sometimes. Great sounding and playable bass for the price.

I wonder about the new ones called ATK 800 or something like that,

Sly, aside from the hefty price tag, I've read good things about the new ATK800-805 series soundwise. Here's a link I found to sound clips of the new bass, and it sounds good. It takes a a small bit of time for the clip to load.... http://www.ibanez.com/atkSoundSamples/index.html

Of course, no lefties are being built. Also, I have permanent search-bots installed on eBay looking for left-hand ATK's, and these days it seems lefties only appear about every six months or less. I get email updates almost everyday regarding ATK's, but they're all right-handed. You can all rest assured that as soon as a lefty appears on eBay, I'll be posting it!

I'm sure a Stingray or Stingray clone will pop up sooner than later. If you're interested in something a bit more high end I know that Regenerate has a lefty Stingray style bass available.

I'll officially introduce this new configuration to my Regenerator line at the upcoming NAMM Show

Currently, this configuration is only available as a lefty ... and specs include a Nordstrand MM4.2 pickup and Nordstrand 2B-MM 9v preamp.

Most everybody who's had opportunity to play this here at the shop agress that it's near impossible to hear the difference between my '77 SR and this. If you're at the 2013 NAMM Show in January, stop by the booth (Hall E Booth 1306) and give it a spin for yourself

all the best,

No affiliation by me to the store, but there's a used Stingray (black/black guard with rosewood board... same as mine but unmodded) at my local music shop for $999 Canadian.

I suggest contacting the store to see what they can do. vanbass@long-mcquade.com

The guys who work the department are Jean and Jahmeel. both good guys, if they can help you they will. Tell them lefty Andrew told you about the bass and to talk to them.

Thanks for asking :) Since this will be officially introduced at NAMM in late Jan 2013, I'll send you pricing via PM. I think you'll find it very competitively priced, even more so when considering that I currently make these one at a time

Iozz:

I have had a chance to play this one when I visited Rod once. I generally don't like Musicman Style basses for many reasons, but, if I were going to get a MM then this would be it. Usually MM's are boat anchors, and I did not feel this one was a boat anchor at all. At the end of the day I am a Fender guy, but this was definitely nice.

I'd like to A/B/C my modded Stingray, Rod's Regenerate and Rod's vintage Stingray to see how close each is to the other.

Beautiful! Very nice piece of ash too, with really wild patterns.
