Dobro Bass

Post by leftybassatl »

Here's something you don't see every day. Not sure I could find a use for it, but certainly interesting....

If I remember Sly3000 got one. He previously said it sounds incredibly close to an upright but the intonation had not been adjusted when converted to lefty and the bass sounded out of tune in the upper register.

Here's a halfway decent soundbite:

My immediate thoughts were, "It looks neck heavy." I posed the question to the reviewer so we'll see what he has to say (or if Sly3000 wants to answer that).

I have the guitar version of it and I love it. It's very loud and bassy therefore the bass must really have tons of lows.

My first reaction to this video is it does cut through well enough, but obviously the pick helps with that. When he goes to "finger style", he's still playing like a guitar player, and not like a bass player, so it never (for me) really starts to sound like an acoustic bass. There's no doubt he can play, and the chord section of his video sounds great, but I'm a died-in-the-wool finger plucker, so I never heard what I would consider to be a true bass sound. Would certainly like to hear it plugged in though... It certainly is a good-looking instrument though!

Got to try a righty version in a shop in Portland a few weeks back and despite iffy reviews I've read in the past I thought it sounded really good. If I have the money I'd get one of these to fill my acoustic bass needs no problem.
