Your thoughts on "Flipping"...

Sooooo, I have a problem. I've fallen in love with a righty bass, but they don't make it left handed because no one cares about us. My question for you lovely people is...Flipping, is it worth it?

Depends on the body shape. I had a ibanez eb3 righty for years. It was ok but for my craw hand ( to keep from touching the controls) which I still have now that I play lefties lol

Only you can answer that at the end of the day. What kind of bass is it? Are you willing to sacrifice access to upper frets? How does it play? Are you happy with it? Personally, I'll never have another righty bass, but if you can dig it and it works for you, then go for it.

The problem with flipping is that it allows manufacturers to continue to discriminate against us. You're basically paying them to slap you in the face.

You could probably find a company willing to make you a left-handed version of what you want. Then write the original company and tell them they've lost your business.

I'm with Matt - I'll go without before I flip a bass.

Thanks guys, problem is is, it's a signature bass (Pete Wentz Squier P bass, to be exact) and signature basses are designed to the dexerity of the player. Of course they had to make a RH version of Paul Gray's bass. But they won't make any other sig's LH. Squier's pretty much all I'm willing to pay at this moment, cause I'm no where near good enough to build/afford a custom.

have you tried looking on sites like rondomusic? they have some nice cheap Lefty basses imho here's a link check'em out.

Yeah, I've looked at Rondo, but am afraid I'll get a dud. Plus, on the only P bass they have right now, the neck looks orange...

+1. If you like the bass and it speaks to you (and you haven't found the righty configuration to be counter-productive), then who cares what orientation it is? Case in point, I would never buy a lefty version of this:

How do you play it with all the knobs above the E string? You pretty much have to come at it via playing across the heel of the guitar bridge with your arm parallel to the strings. Zero room for down stroking though.

My first bass was a righty flipped Westbury Track II. The nice thing about the flipped orientation was it turned the P PUP configuration into a reverse P, which is my preferred P PUP setup.

Thanks guys, the bass I'm looking at only has 1 knob, so I don't think it getting in the way will be much of a problem. I mean, Jimi Hendrix did it, so why not, ya know?

there's a lot of people here who have flipped basses to jam on including ME.
There are some here who play inverted strings so no stringflip is necessary when using a righty bass including ME.
There are people here who have a lovely righty bass that just says "play-me" and no possibility of a lefty ever being made to match it including ME.

however, there are some models ya just cant feel comfortable playing either because the knobs get in the way, or the body is useless flipped over due to the shape of it.

I played my Tbird flipped for years and never had an issue. I played a number of non-fender flipped p-basses for years and never had an issue. I still have quite a lot of rightys over here which get played all the time, just not on stage anymore.

Do what you want. Flip it. I currently have ten basses, three of which are righties that I flipped. I may own a righty Thumb bass
soon which I'll flip.

A P-style bass is perfect for the flipping - just check out this photo from 1984 of me. <g>
