I bumped Pjmuck's and my reviews of the Jag back on the board for you in case you are interested:

I bought mine from the same vendor. Still have/use it all the time.

Is there any big difference between the models with a painted headstock vs. natural?

I picked up a righty Jag bass for my girlfriend a couple years ago for around $850 new, the price was increased by Fender shortly after, and then they stopped carrying them in North America all together from what I was told.

Not sure I could justify a $1600 lefty version of the same thing. They are nice, but the electronics are kinda flakey.

No difference other than the paint job.

Fender still imports this bass from Japan according to their site, although the CAR & VW finishes are gone:

Mostly though, they are concentrating on the cheaper Squier versions, which feature different pick-up combos and scale lengths. No lefties for any of them.

As for the price for the Ebay model: agreed, objectively it's too expensive for what the instrument is. You have to be an intense Jaguar/Jazzmaster fan to be willing to part with that kind of $$ unless you're flush.

At the time the lefties were first offered, the candy apple finish was only available as a lefty. The righty red model distributed to the US/Canada was in a hot rod red finish. It looks like they're offering it in candy apple red now, however. The candy apple red finish with matching headstock is stunning, but Fender Japan should be kicked all over the schoolyard for shipping this gorgeous instrument in a piece of garbage gig bag the equivalent to a cheap wardrobe bag. It's a joke (that is, until you find some nice chips taken out of your finish).

I agree, the prices now are pretty steep.
