a group of friends in Pittsburgh have a ThinLizzy trib band. The drummer used to play for us in 2008. The guitar player used to play in a IronMaiden band with me in the early 2000's. The bassist I have known for years.
just a happy musical community around here among musicians and friends.
and why nobody does this TL song on youtube as a bass cover I'll never know :

yes I was playing my bass with the string orientation correct on this one since there are no fast moving riffs or runs in it...

Are you kidding me? I loved Jack Bruce, Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, etc. etc. as bass players, but the only guy I ever idolized was Phil. He was EVERYTHING to me in my teens- absolutely the essence of cool, and the consumate triple threat (player, singer, writer). Thin Lizzy was (and still is) my #1 all time band.

Re: Any other Phil Lynott love out there?
Thought it might be kinda cool to try to post a chronology of Phils basses- he is of course very closely associated with the Fender Precision (and that mirror pickguard)-- but he used a few different basses at various times over the course of his playing days. There are a few other things he posed with or played in videos (BC Rich, Yamaha), but these are the ones he actually played live...

- Then thru the mid to late 70's came the Precision era, starting with this rosewood boarded one..

- Next up was an Ibanez RS-900, again with a mirror pickguard added.

- Finally, alot of folks have wondered what was that "custom" bass Phil was playing toward the end of his career? An Ibanez? A Yamaha? Nope- it was a Roland G-88 Synth / Midi Bass, of all things!

- The Roland was modified with black finish and mirror pickguard, and to the best of anyone's knowledge Phil never used the synth features, in fact he may have had some of the electronics pulled out...but there must have been something about it he really liked- the neck perhaps?

Re: Any other Phil Lynott love out there?
Count me in ! I love Phil Lynnot pway of playing bass. I had a good expereince in a band, playing TL covers, very interesting ! And he was a very good bass player
Re: Any other Phil Lynott love out there?
It has been many years since I have listened to Thin Lizzy, but I always loved what I heard. Back then, I was not a bassist (a guitard), so I always loved his songwriting and vocals. Need to go back and listen to his bass playing.
Re: Any other Phil Lynott love out there?
I think of the three areas (playing, singing, songwriting) it took me longest to learn to really appreciate Phils playing. In my youth I was focused on trying to emulate the more flash guys playing styles (Lee, Squire, Bruce, etc.), but I was totally in love with Thin Lizzy as a band (the songs, Phil's vocals, the twin guitar attack). As my playing matured I started to pay more notice to Phil's bass work and really got into it. He was never flashy but he came up with some very clever bass lines, and his propulsive (for lack of a better term) playing style really drove the momentum within what Lizzy was doing musically. In that regard Phil and drummer Brian Downey complemented each other perfectly in that way the happens when you grow up playing together as they did. And Phil always had great tone and definition! Even with a guitar on both sides you never had any problem hearing what he was playing- yet it never got in the way of all the dual guitar action.
