Orange Terror 500 Bass Amp

Post by Matt R. »

Hey guys, I just bought an Orange Terror Head off a guy on Talkbass. I don't have it yet, but I have read overwhelmingly excellent reviews on this thing and there are some youtube vids where the thing sounds great. Has anyone here used one? What did you think of it?

Here's a pic the guy sent me:

I'm looking forward to rocking it through my Ampeg 410HLF :ugeek:

Cool, I'm really curious how you like it, I've been thinking of picking one up, my Traynor isn't doing it for me these days

I hear there's a 1,000 watt version on the way.

I'd like to hear this amp, I dig the simplicity and I like the pre in the AD200B (which is supposed to be the same as in the terror bass).

Nice score Matt. I would be very interested in hearing your feedback from these. My guitarist has the Tiny Terror guitar version and it is killin'. He uses it live now as his personal monitor with a 112 cab.

Throw his Tiny Terror onto one of your cabs and try it for bass. Great distortion tone!

The amp arrived. I'll be plugging it into a TS Electronic 212 cab this evening and I'll let you know how it sounds.

Well the amp sounds fantastic. I heard a lot about how you can't really dial in a clean sound on this amp- nonsense. Keep the gain low and dial up the volume and you're good. The dirty sound that you can get out of this amp is awesome. I tried it with the gain at 4 and the volume around 2 and it was beautifully nasty. Think Geezer. I'm playing it through a TC Electronic RS212 cab which sounds great. I'm of course playing this solo in my bass room and it's shaking the walls and scaring the cats. The amp is small and light but feels extremely powerful. I will try it through an Ampeg 410hlf tomorrow night in a power trio setting and report back.

Side note: This amp is 500 watts, and the cab is 400 watts. Is this a dangerous combo? Thanks
Matt

Not a problem. It's better to have more head watts than cabinet watts. That translates to more headroom, so the cab will open up and sound better! Enjoy!

That is true and not so true. Depends on the rig, and I'm way too tired to launch into a discussion about it tonight. For example, I have a 50 watt Reeves/Hiwatt head that'll burn up efficient 75 watt speakers for lunch.

For Matt's purposes, he'll be fine, especially once the speakers are broken in. Wouldn't max out the amp until the speakers are broken in.

I played the rig tonight in an acoustic setting. It's extremely loud and the cab handled the amp very well. I dealt with boominess all night, but that was my fault.

I am a dope.

In all my horniness for my new gear, I brilliantly decided to bring my new PBass to play through a rig that I'm thoroughly unfamiliar with, so I fought with my tone a lot, but I got it dialed in. I should have just played my 74 Jazz through it tonight but oh well. This Orange amp is killer so far. Can't wait to try the 410 with it.

I played an Orange Terror 500 today at a guitar store, and yeah it sounded great. If I'm ever a millionaire I may just get one.

Yeah, I know it was a generalization, but but I'd rather have more head room than not....
