What is a great alternative for a decent price is the Yamaha 414L (the passive one) -
I heard a lot of good things about this bass and I recently heard a guy playing one, it sounded great. There is one for sale at Jersey Guitar for $350

32" is medium scale, not short. But, it's definitely not long scale.

Correct. FWIW, 30" is short scale.

-2". compared to a 34" scale, it's like having the nut at the first fret. I'd love to try one.

Hmmm. Lefty G&L SB-1 would do the trick. They quit making them around 2003 or so, and they are getting rare.
