I have a Marshall Major amplifier in need of new transformers. So far I have only had positive response from Mercury Electronics in the USA - their prices are $450 each before shipping costs !!! Can anyone help in locating a reliable source of these units ?? Many thanks. |

Most any tech who can diagnose a failed transformer will have a source for repair or replacement. I can point you to a few, but first, who told you the amp needs new trannies? Majors do a have rep for eating tubes, but their transformers are usually fairly robust. |

The fault was diagnosed by my local Marshall agent, acknowledged but with no help offered by Marshall UK. These facts given : can you assist with locating a reliable source of transformers ? Regards, |

Heyboer sells new ones and rewinds old ones. They'll be slightly cheaper than Mercury Magnetics, but for an amp as relatively oddball as the Major, tranny replacement is going to run around $1000 just for the parts. You could sub some generic Hammond iron and make it work. They will be alot more common, and hence less expensive, and they will also do custom work, as well. BTW, I wouldn't take what your "local Marshall agent" has to say as gospel until I had a tube amp specialist have a look at the amp. Unless something catastrophic happend like it got turned on outside in the rain or had beer spilled inside it, the chances that both trannies are dead is small...unless of course someone who didn't know they were doing had already been messing around inside the amp. |
