Does anyone know if the preamp on a Sire V7 shuts off when you flip the switch, or do you have to unplug it to turn it off?
I seem to be running through nine volt batteries at an absolutely nuts rate, but I don't even use the preamp very often.

Normally a preamp is turned off by unplugging the bass, not by using the passive switch. Guess it's no different on the Sire preamp.
If you unplug it and it's eating batteries for lunch there must be something wring with the wiring.

That's disappointing, but I bet it would not be hard to replace the stock passive/active switch with a DP/DT switch and wire it to cut battery power. I would definitely take a look under the hood to see if it would be that easy and, if so, do it.

Something doesn't sound right. My batteries last for months on my Sire. But you should unplug the bass when not in use.

Yeah, I frequently leave it plugged in. The V7 has quickly become my main player (you can't quit that fifth string once you're hooked!) and I pick it up and put it down twenty times a day.
