I recently acquired this Aria SB-1000 with several mods. It left the factory as a fretless with just the middle one of its current three pickups (original Aria pickups identical to the middle one), the jack on the front and active electronics. It is currently running passive, with a different varitone (the stock one was included though) and a balance pot where the jack used to be, and the middle pickup should be activated with the switch but currently doesn't work.

I'm not looking to restore it into its former glory, but I would like to make a fully functioning instrument out of it again, maybe with the classic SB-1000 circuit back in place running the middle pickup, and with two modern sounding pickups in the outer positions to add versatility. I'm looking for suggestions, and wondering if any drop-in replacements exist. Shoot!

Hi Jeroen

Nice bass i was looking at this a long time ago but decided not to buy it. Theres 2 places i only know who will make a drop in replacement pickup.

One is Aaron Armstrong in the UK. Hes a very nice guy just like his dad Kent. He will make you a replacement better than the original. http://www.armstrongpickups.co.uk/

This guy in Finland does replacements too.

Thanks, I'll check these out!
I also found this guy who makes rather expensive neodynium pickups with a very modern tone, apparently. I find them intriguing, but at 150 USD a piece, rather expensive.

That's great looking bass Jeroen, and whoever did the upgrades - frets, additional pickups - did a good job of making it all look like an original factory build! Will be interested to read your thoughts on how it sounds once everything is working... will be interesting to see what you think of having three pickups to switch to, or combine...
