Hi there, i'm looking for a cheap jazz bass.

I'd like to know if any of you had the chance to play instruments like these or can suggest me some other cheap "unknown" brand worth lookin for :

No experience with either brand. Generally, cheap instruments are more trouble than they're worth, as you'll end up investing more money into getting them up to speed with mods and upgrades. I'd say the best bang for the buck you can find is easily the Peavey Foundation (can be had for under $200 if you look, though they don't look the part they sound it), followed by the Squire Vintage Modified J. I've also heard good reviews of the Rondo Music SX line:

Stagg is a very common brand here in Europe, but they're generally considered to be a fair starter instrument, but no more than that. I've never heard of the Chord.

I would agree with Peter, if you're in the USA a Peavey Foundation is an amazing bass for the money. Outside the US they're very uncommon (rare even), with a price to match. The Squier Vintage Modified J's are great bang for the buck and cool instruments, both the '62 style (rosewood fingerboard, sunburst finish) and the '75 style (maple fingerboard, black blocks and binding, natural finish).

The SX brand that Rondo Music sells has gotten good reviews over the past couple of years. There's a couple of threads on Talkbass regarding them...

sometimes great right out of the box, others prefer to change out the pickups and bridge. Construction is good though... I bought a jazz 5-string from them for $100, and it's a decent bass for the money. Jeroen's suggestion of finding a Peavey Foundation bass is a good one too..
