Quick update...

I've only had it for a few days now, and even though I completely understand that I'm still in my honeymoon phase, this is by FAR the sweetest bass I have ever owned in every possible way.

Construction, sound, feel, playability... literally everything.

Still getting used to a couple of things, but... once that's over... heaven.

I'll try to post more pics and/or sound samples when I can get a minute.

I'll cut to the chase and just tell y'all that I LOVE this bass.

I've fiddled around with it A LOT since I got it, and was finally able to gig with it last weekend. I also took a few minutes this morning and recorded a little ditty so you guys can get a quick and dirty representation of what she sounds like.

There was a HINT of front end compression added to limit peaks, but that's it... and it was about half of what I've had to use for other basses. All controls on the bass were set completely FLAT... the midrange switch was set to the bottom position... I'm not sure what that means though.

Here's the short and sweet...

Firstly, I'm not sure why these basses were ever called "plastic-y sounding" but those people are certainly misinfomed. I've heard several Modulus basses that were very sterile, but this bass sounds VERY earthy to me.

The bottom line is that it is by all accounts the perfect representation of what a hi-end jazz bass should be. It has all the throat of my Mike Lull M5V, but it is more compressed in the lows and mids, and has a much more open and airy top... much less brittle than most jazz basses I've heard.

It's not "vintage"... but it's not supposed to be. It's a very hi-fi representation of a Jazz bass, and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for.

The Mike Lull M5V has the updated vintage sound down... it's like 60% modern, 40% vintage. The Zon is more like 90% modern, 10% vintage.

Anyway, the courtship is still in full effect, and I'm certainly still in the honeymoon stages, but... so far, this one is a keeper through and through. I'm still getting used to it, honestly... but I can only think that the more I get used to it, the more I'll fall in love.

:D

Wow, sounds terrific. Really nice growl and evenness to it, though I'll attribute some of that to your playing as well. How's the low B on it? I don't think I heard anything in the demo in the lower registers.

Congrats on a great purchase!

Thanks man!!!

Yeah, I just realized that I didn't utilize the b-string  , but... it's easily as tight and as focused as any B I've seen/played/heard.

It's a Zon stainless .130 string... no taper or anything on there.

I had DR Sunbeams 45-125 on there for aobut a half-a-day and they sounded SICK... but I took them off right away and put the steels back on for New Year's rock show I did at an old stinky rock club. I wanted to save the new DR's from the sweat bath and use the steels instead... but, now the steels sound really nice, so I'm going to keep them on there until they're completely dead.

Congrats - it sounds great! How about a walking bass line for the heck of it?

Ok, why not?

I SUCK at walking basslines, so please be warned.

THis is with the "middle" mid setting... and I also noticed that I recorded that other bassline I did on an old track that had some EQ on it that was taking out some of the highs. So... it sounds even better now that I got rid of that. :ugeek:

Anyway...

A fine job, Addy! The Zon sounds great, and you're right about it a modern sound to it, but I think that's the strings you have on it at the moment. It sounds nice and "tight"! I can see (and hear) why you're diggin' this bass! 8-)

Excellent Chris.

It does sound really bitty and growly like a good jazz bass mid-70's.

Congratulations on the bass.
