There's a threasd over at Talkbass about the new Dingwall website, and I made a little comment saying, "Still no lefties... "

Well, Sheldon from Dingwall addressed my post, and it almost sounds promising!

Check it out, along with my reply!

I know they are not in same league, but I noticed Rondo has starting doing fanned fretted guitars. Maybe they'll eventually have a lefty model. I hope they do cause I'd love to try out playing one on something a lot cheaper.

But a Dingwall is something I might be willing to save up for. I've liked their basses since I first found out about them.

Interesting.
However, if he is using CNC production methods then his claim of lefties being cost prohibative due to tooling issues is BS.

That's awesome news from Dingwall.
We should get the membership together to commision Dingwall to produce a run of them for us. I may be broke, but I'd find the $$$ for a Dingwall

actually ... if he's using vacuum clamping to hold the bodies/necks instead of manual clamping there would be need for an entirely new set of holding tools. depending on the design and body contours, it could get significantly expensive rather quickly.

I like vacuum clamping for the ease of clamping and the elimination of hand work to cut off the clamping ears and blend the area into the surrounding surface. it's how I'm planning to go with my CNC. the downside is that I need to provide drawings to a local machine shop for the vacuum tooling - one pair of tools per body (or neck) and orientation at a few hundred $$US per tool, it'd be even more if I had to pay to have the engineering design drawn up :(

all the best,

R

Perhaps, but considering the price of a Dingwall he would recoup his expenses with the sale of only a few instruments. If Sheldon believes that he will only ever sell a dozen instruments then yes, it isn't worth the investment. But I think there is a bit larger market for his product among lefties than that. :D
