There's a Chinese guitar designer selling stuff on ebay now who's making dirt cheap custom designed guitars and basses. Some of the stuff is way out there, like this double neck:

There's Vox Teardrop copies, Parker Flys, Steinbergers, Chapman sticks, double, triple necked basses, etc. He'll make anything lefty, and it sounds like he'll even make something to order based on your design too. Most of his instruments are under $400 shipped, which could be a bargain if he makes a quality instrument. (If he's using Chinese parts, I'd probably consider changing out the pots for CTS at the very least though). Communication may be spotty, as his english doesn't seem to be all that great, and I can't vouch for the quality, but he's getting positive reviews.
