Muckelroy HMS Pro Player 5 String

Post by bhunt1 »

Just put a down payment on an HMS Pro Player 5 String from Brady Muckelroy. Here are my specs:

*5 string HMC Pro Player (LEFTY)
*fretted
*33"
*3 pc maple neck
*alder tone block
*ebony fingerboard
*standard side dots only
*mahogany wings
*passive electronics (VVT)
*18mm spacing at bridge
*black hardware

The Pro Player series is his "budget line." No fancy woods but 100% hand made by him. He is using new custom Ulyate pickups, soapbars based on the Ulyate TicTac P pickup. Brady said they will be reversed to have the pickup farther out on the upper strings. He also said Howard Ulyate can make the pickups specifically for a lefty bass so Brady doesn't have to flip the righty pickups and have the logo on upside down.
These are attractively priced - $1,995 for a 5 string. He's posted that on Facebook so I am not violating any confidences. Brady told me he has had several inquiries for lefty Pro Player basses. Anyone here ask about them?

My timing on this was good. I made the deposit 2 days ago, and I got a pic of my fretboard today. It's the 7th one from the left. I love ebony.

I'd never touched ebony until I got it on my custom shop G&L. I, too, absolutely loved it.

He estimated 4-5 months. Seems like it's moving more quickly than that. These instruments are more standardized than his one off custom builds and that keeps the price and the build time down. I will def post more pics as I get them. Thanks for looking.

Demo with the new Muck branded Ulyate pickups. I added the preamp to my build. Glad I did after hearing this.

Got to say, even strung B-E-A-D, this bass sounds clear, and even, across the strings... looking forward to your sound bytes when you have a chance to post up.... :)

I have a Muckelroy bass very similar to yours. It was before he started doing the "Pro Player" but it's very similar. Mine is a five-string, scale, with a Macassar Ebony fretboard. Mine is a solid cherry body and has an active preamp.

You are going to love it. Easily the best bass that I have ever owned or played.

Brady often broadcasts his build process on Facebook live, and I happened to catch him gluing up my 5 string. These are reversed images due to Facebook. He is very meticulous.
