M-Series sound clips

I'm writing bass parts for the band's studio session, and thought I'd share a very rough capture of what I'll be laying down as part of a 13/8 instrumental break in one tune

details (updated)

- bass used: M-Series 4-string loaded with Nordy Big Singles and 2-band preamp
- settings: pickups in three different conditions as noted on clip (bridge solo, blended, neck solo)
- preamp on, passive tone full on, active tone set flat
- signal direct into a Tascam DR-05
- other: one take, no metronome reference, finger style played over the neck pickup

these are my first ever recordings made with the DR-05 I bought last night. I have spent a total of five minutes with this device, and simply used the factory defaults to get these clips recorded this morning. I'm also sure if I had taken the time to warm up I'd have captured a significantly better take in each case, but then the purpose of this was simply to get you a chance to hear one of my basses in the raw as played by an average player who hasn't even finished his first morning cup of coffee

all the best,

R

Do you have iTunes? You can change it to an mp3 by going to Preferences/General, then look for and click on the "Import Settings" button. Change the "Import Using" setting to mp3, and click OK on the boxes. Next, or I should say after you've loaded your song into iTunes, right-click on the song track, and look for "Create mp3 Version" in the menu. After it's done converting, it's best to drag the song to a file on your desktop for example, so you can load it up to whatever website you're using.

These are the settings on my MacBook Pro. If you have Windows, it should still be very similar....

iTunes didn't like that workflow and all I managed to accomplish was a steady stream of error messages :x

I did have success uploading it as a zipped file :)

all the best,

I downloaded it and tried to run it through Itunes and W.M.P and neither one will play it.

OK I saw that GC has the Tascam DR-05 on sale for $99m so I snagged one of these on my way home this evening. once I get it figured out, I'll re-record the clips using the neck solo, both equal, and bridge solo. I'll also record both the Koa topped 4-string and a Maple topped Swamp Ash 5-string for reference using the same line. Both basses have the same pickups and pre, so it should make for an interesting reference

all the best,

R

OK - new attachments this morning. let me know if these work for you

if they work, I'll capture clips of the 5-string later today

all the best,

worked for me!
How did you record the tracks? Any DI before the Tascam?

As for the tones, I liked the blended even pickups the best. The solo neck pickup had some Ric-like nasal-thang going on. Way cool. Of course, these would sound completely different once they were set into a full mix. In which case I'm thinking the solo bridge would cut through the mix a lil better, assuming minimal EQ is applied to the tracks.

cool! I guess I can go forward with getting clips of the 5-string recorded 8-)

my signal chain was simple: a cord plugged into the bass and also the Tascam

I'm thinking now that I also want to record this same bass with the preamp in bypass mode. this should provide a nice a/b between active and passive modes, with everything else being equal (well, as equal as can be when plucking strings finger style)

I also found how to convert the source files into mp3 format. I'll be sure to upload future clips in this smaller file size

all the best,

R

I'm on a MacBook Pro, and don't know if that's got something to do with my not seeing your links, but they aren't showing up at all. Is there some other way for me to get to the links?

I had a couple free minutes this evening to make a couple quick clips on one of my M-Series 5-strings (Swamp Ash body with Maple top, Maple / Pau Ferro fretboard)

Details are pretty much the same as the 4-string track:
- bass used: M-Series 5-string loaded with Nordy Big Singles and 2-band preamp
- settings: pickups in three different conditions as noted on clip (bridge solo, blended, neck solo)
- preamp on, passive tone full on, active tone set flat
- signal direct into a Tascam DR-05
- other: one take, no file manipulations, no metronome reference, finger style played over the neck pickup

I don't have time to upload these clips to my Regenerate server, so for tonight all there will be are the three attached zip files ... sorry

all the best,

R

this take is part of a melodic tapping song currently being written for elec bass, upright played arco (bowed), and percussion. for our band to do this live, I'll need to have the keyboardist play the arco parts since I can't tap and bow at the same time

Details: M-Series 4-string direct into the DR-05, pickups blend in center position, passive tone wide open, no active tone shaping, no processing/effects/etc ...

I think I need to play with the recording sample rate, as I hear harmonic distortion in the high-end that isn't on my bass when I play direct to a hi-fi bass amp. if it's not the sample rate, then maybe it's the recording unit itself. I'll have to record with the built-in mics to see if it's still there

all the best,

R
