new tool day today! new tool day today! new tool day today! :D

I've been needing something a little wider than my current 6" jointer for flattening billets in prep for resawing (remember that honkin slab of Maple burl?) ... after many months of searching, I was able to find a used Inca 550 10" Jointer/Planer in the local Craigslist. I gave it a look and a test joint/plane and all was well with the nicely cared for unit. I'll have my work cut-out for me after NAMM ...

even came with (hard to find) extra gears for the dual speed planer power feed - nice!

Image

add to the score several spare belts and an extra set of carbide blades for the cutter head, and this was a great tool deal IMO

I now have the capacity to offer 2-piece joined (but not glued) body and 1/2/3-piece neck blanks to those who want to build their own. not looking to become a wood seller, but I do live in the land of Alder so I might as well help out someone who doesn't have all the big tools to work with rough lumber from the lumberyard

all the best,

R

a definite score at a great price :D

only remaining major tool on my list is a dual drum flatbed sander similar to this 16" model offered by Grizzly

I have been utilizing a Performax 22-44 for several years now

but this tool design suffers in its ability to keep the sanding drum parallel to the table bed with machinist precision. on a regular day I can easily keep the flex to within 1/64" side-side on a 16" wide body blank - well within industry tolerance for working custom bodies by hand, but unacceptable for anything I'm going to cut with the CNC that I'm starting to build (as time permits, and more as a science project)

all the best,

R

The giant sanders are tres' cool.
I used to have 2 glue ups that were too large to evenly sand out with hand tools so I would take them to a local door shop that had one of those huge drum sanders, couple of passes and I was practically ready for finishing! :D
Great tool to have.
