That "enhanced" grain looks incredible. How do they do that? Is it similar to how Fender created Wildwood Coronados, by injecting ink into the trees?

I think they dye the whole body with black ink and let it soak for a while, then sand. I guess the big challenge is to know the liquidity of the ink, the amount to apply, and the time to let it soak so when sanding you get the right amount of exposed dyed grain.

But what do I know. . .

Nice bass. Welcome, Jim. I'm sorry I never replied to you about this bass. . . we exchanged a couple of e-mails about it a few weeks/months ago. Let's just say that other basses got my attention in the meantime.

Thanks Andrew and Carlos for the compliments. Yes, I am very glad to be in this lefty group and reading all the good stuff here. This bass is a beauty. The enhanced grain is dye rubbed across the body and rubbed out. The grain retains the dye and give it that enhanced finish. There is a nitro finish on the bass so it can breath and sing. I love the enhanced grain and fought for this bass when it was delivered to Atlanta Bass Gallery in late 2005. Now I have too many and need to sell a few. I just received my FBass fretless so this one has to unfortunately go. It is a good one..!
I hate to say it might go on the bay shortly.

This Bad boy is gone. She was traded last week. I'll post her replacement when I receive the bass and take some pics. Thanks to all the people with interest but sorry.. she's gone.
