I tell people all the time - listen with your ears. Then look at the name.

Very true. The tone of an instrument can vary from the exact same model run - no two instruments truly sound alike. I've read many times in threads on Talkbass.com of SX bass-buyers who love the stock sound on a $100-$150 bass, and others who gut the electronics, and install custom systems, but are happy with the "bones' of the bass. It is indeed all in the ear of the player, and how that translates to the ear of the listener. But the great thing about electric guitars etc. - you can do SO much to change the sound of the instrument, as long as it is built well to begin with. And that's part of the fun, n'est-ce pas?
